Canna King Midas“Further work experience has highlighted some of the demands and challenges of practising Medicine. Earlier this year, I was able to shadow junior doctors on a GI surgical ward, as well as a GP in daily practice. Seeing a team of doctors educating a patient with learning difficulties about the complexities of liver failure helped me understand how doctors listen to and communicate with patients.”

James, who went on to be successful in an Oxbridge application with this Medicine personal statement, is here demonstrating a way in which work experience – so useful for a Medical application – can be used in the personal statement. Years later and well into his journey through Medical school, James is now able to look back and see strengths in the statement, but also ways in which it could have been improved, so he’s annotated it to help you out while you pen your first drafts.
